A Model Railway Layout portraying a Great Eastern Railway Country Station.

Welcome to the website of Flintfield, a model railway layout portraying, in 4mm to the foot scale, a fictious North Suffolk branch line terminus as it would have appeared around 1910 under Great Eastern Railway ownership.

A GER Class M15 2-4-2T Locomotive crosses the river with a passenger train

Suffolk, away from the coast, has a flat and gently undulating landscape crossed by a network of rivers. It is well known for its extensive farming and has largely arable land. Although fictious, Flintfield is broadly based on the Great Eastern Railway (GER) station at the market town of Eye.

A Great Eastern minor line, the three-mile Mellis to Eye branch opened in 1865 having been constructed by an independent company but operated by the GER. The line remained profitable for many years but eventually closed to passengers in 1931. Freight services although initially strong, were impacted by the opening of the nearby Mid-Suffolk Light Railway in 1904, the branch finally succumbing to the inevitable closure in 1964.
